10. Anything a Person does (i) According to his Own Plan (ii)With his own strength/might &(iii)for his own glory/honour is equal to Babylon.
In Daniel 2, God wanted the King to repent by giving him the dream on the kingdoms that would rule the world. But he didn't repent. In Daniel 4 here, that is about 32yrs later, Daniel advised the King to (i)Stop sinning by practicing righteousness & (iii) stop committing iniquities by showing mercy to the poor, so as to make God rescind His decision to punish him. Yet the king didn't listen. God again gave the king 12 months (i.e. one year), if he would listen to Daniel's preaching and repent. Yet he didn't. So, as he walked in his palace one day, he began to boast of how successful he was, in building the City of Babylon.
History has it that Babylon was a great city. It covered a land area of about 14milesx14miles, fenced all round in reinforced concrete walls of about 350feet high & 90feet thick. Again, within the Babylon City was ''The Hanging Garden,'' which is one of the Seven Wonders of the (Ancient) World. So, Babylon was a ''great'' city.
But instead of King Nebuchadnezzar to recognized that he was only a vessel, used by God, he rather thought he built Babylon...
(i) By his own Plan/Idea/Innovation.
(ii) By his own Power/strength/intellect/
(iii) For his Glory/credit/honour/ego/
When boasting, the king asked rhetorically ''Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power & for the honour of my majesty?'' Take a look: ''I have built; by my might & for my glory.'' This was the same thing Lucifer did & God debased him ( Isaiah 14:12-14); the rich man in Jesus' parable did same & God killed him that night (Luke 12:16-19). Also, as King Herod was praised by the gathering when delivering a speech, instead of redirecting the praise to God, he received it & God struck him dead & instantly, worms ate him up (Acts 12:1-4). NB: For more notes on pride & its consequences, refer to Messages shared on Saturday & Sunday, December 7 & 8, 2013.
So whilst boasting, God's judgement came upon him & he was turned into a beast & lived among beast in the forest for 7years. Don' forget, King Nebuchadnezzar built Babylon according by his own plan, with his own might & for his glory. The Tower of Babel, which is recorded in Genesis Chapter 11 was also being built according to the people's own plan, by their own strength & for their own glory. So God came down & altered their language & their ambition became cos90. In our days, anyone/pastor/leader/
Let's learn humility the easy way, as Daniel did...Else we will learn it the Hard way, as Kings Nebuchadnezzar & Herod did and as the rich man in Jesus' parable in Luke 19 also did. Amen!
We shall start Part Five; Daniel Chapter 5 on Friday, January 31, 2014, If God permits.
