The Charismatic Falsehood Message 4: EXTORTION IN GOD'S HOUSE
Sunday, October 12, 2014....Topic One: The Charismatic Falsehood
Message 4: EXTORTION IN GOD'S HOUSE (''MEN OF GOD'' MAKING THEMSELVES RICH IN THE NAME OF RELIGION THROUGH SALES OF ANOINTING OIL, HANDKERCHIEFS, WATER FROM ISRAEL OR BORE-HOLES, STICKERS, ETC)
By: Brother Samuel Kwasi Forkuo
''And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.'' (Matthew 21:12-13)
One of the most wide-spread charismatic falsehood in our generation is ''Making Money in the name of Religion,'' which I often refer to as ''Extortion.'' More often than not, you see or hear preachers lambaste Policemen for extorting money from drivers on our highways. Meanwhile, these preachers are doing same (if not worse) thing in the house of God.
In fact, many Churches, temples and prayer camps have been turned into Wall Streets, World Trade Centres and in fact Markets. Clearly, from the afore-referred Text (Matthew 21), this phenomenon didn't start with our generation, at least it dated back to our Lord Jesus' time. When He saw religious leaders making money in the name of religion in the House of God in Jerusalem, He was furious, drove them away and referred to what God had already prophesied through Isaiah in Chapter 56:7.
In our days, the number is astronomical; so many so-called prophets have resorted to selling to the Congregants/Church Members things such as ANOINTING OIL, WATERS FROM THEIR BORE-HOLES OR FROM ISRAEL, HANDKERCHIEFS & STICKERS WHICH HAVE PICTURES OF THESE PROPHETS.
When questioned about the Biblical background to their selling of these items, these so-called prophets would often misquote to you Acts 19:12 (When Paul's handkerchief/Apron was laid on the sick to get healed), James 5:14 (Where Church Leaders are to anoint and pray for a sick brother). They Misquote these scriptures because, although God can heal through anointing oil, handkerchief or any other medium, NOWHERE (AND WATCH IT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE) ARE WE TOLD TO SELL these things to people. Nowhere did Paul Sell Handkerchiefs to anybody. Brother James also DID NOT tell the Church Leaders to Sell the anointing Oil to the sick. YET SO MANY FALSE PROPHETS IN OUR DAYS ARE SELLING TO THE CHURCH MEMBERS HANDKERCHIEFS, ANOINTING OILS, WATERS FROM ISRAEL OR FROM THEIR PERSONAL BORE-HOLES IN THEIR HOUSES AND EVEN STICKERS WHICH BEAR THEIR IMAGES/PHOTOS.
If a Pastor, Prophet or Church Leader makes money genuinely, there is nothing wrong. But for them to make themselves rich through the sales of these paraphernalia (oil, handkerchief, stickers, Water from bole-holes or from Israel, etc) is equivalent to a police man collecting bribe from drivers on the Highway. Both cases are EXTORTIONS and the one done by ''Men of God'' in the ''House of God'' is WORSE THAN the one done by Policemen on our Highways.
A pastor/prophet will buy anointing which cost, say GHC5 (US$1.56) or GHC10 (US$3.12), but sell it to the Congregants at GHC200 (US$62.50) or GHC400 (US$125) just because the pastor/prophet has ''BLESSED'' or ''PRAYED OVER'' it. Thus, the anointing oil or water now costs more because of the special blessing the pastor/prophet has imparted on it. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A SCAM. Yet you see so many naive believers chase these items.
Note well: God's gift should never be sold. If you can heal or prophesy, know that it is GOD who is working through you. It is not by your power; it is a gift from God. He can take it back. DO NOT CHARGE PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD. DO NOT CHARGE WHEN PEOPLE COME TO YOU FOR COUNSELLING OR ADVISE. DO NOT ASK FOR ''CONSULTATION'' FEE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD. DO NOT TURN THE HOUSE OF GOD INTO A DEN OF ROBBERS/THIEVES. HOW MANY PASTORS/PREACHERS/PROPHETS ARE RICH BY GENUINE MEANS/ HOW MANY OF THEM ARE RICH WITHOUT EXPLOITING THE POOR CONGREGANTS? HOW MANY OF THEM EXERCISE THE GIFT(S) OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WITHOUT CHARGING OR ASKING FOR MONETARY RETURNS? THE ANSWER IS ONLY FEW.
One thing I have seen is that, if you do the work of God genuinely, God will lead genuine people to give to you (your needs, not your wants) without you demanding from them. The little that God has blessed you with, is greater than the plenty that you have acquired through fraudulent means. If any of is a victim of ''Making Money in the name of RELIGION,'' let's bow down our heads in shame, confess, repent and return to God. He is ready to receive us.
May God grant us grace to remain faithful to Him, not moved by love for money. ''For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.'' (1 Timothy 6:10)...IN JESUS' NAME HAVE WE PRAYED, AMEN!

The Charismatic Falsehood Message 3: MIRACLE & HEALING
Wednesday, Sept 10, 2014....Topic One: The Charismatic Falsehood
Message 3: MIRACLE & HEALING
By: Brother Samuel Kwasi Forkuo
- In fact, one of the grievous sins the Bible warns us of, is attributing the Work of the Holy Spirit to the devil. Therefore, we must be circumspect when talking about Miracle & Healing - which are also gifts given to the Body of Christ (The Church) for God's Glory (1 Corinthians 12:9&10).
- However, we must be careful not to fall victims to some foul spirits. Some miracles/healing are not from God. Whatever the Lord does/gives, the devil mimics/copies. So, just as God's (miracles/healing) are genuine/original, that of the devil are counterfeit/fake. For just as Moses' & Aaron's rod became a serpent, so did the rods of the enchanters and magicians of Egypt (Exodus 7:10-12). Read carefully what Jesus Christ told the 70 followers he sent, when they came back to give nice report about the miracles and healings they performed.....
- ''Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.'' Luke 10:20 KJV
- By extension, it is not enough to perform miracles or to heal the sick; we must make sure our names are written in the Book of Life. A person can perform powerful miracles and healings and still be lost. If you doubt, read carefully again what Christ said....
''Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.'' Matthew 7:22-23 - When all these scriptures clearly tell us that the ''Ish'' is not in performing miracle or healing, many charismatic churches lay more emphasis on these gifts than living a Christ-like life. Many of the Tele-Evangelist and those we hear them on the radio, are False healers. They use much trickery to dazzle their audience. In fact, in Kenya, 4 people left a hospital to be healed by a famous Tele-Evangelist (name-withheld) at one of his crusades, but they died as a result.
- Someone testified he heard on the 700 Club that a Pastor (name-withheld) claimed he raised a dead person but in an interview he stated he couldn't remember where or when - Where is the one he supposedly raised? Let us be honest, you raise someone from the dead and then you have amnesia as to the name of the person you raised.
- There are those who have claimed to be healed and in the last days God has allowed some people to be healed miraculously. Why?
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: {12} That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Th 2:11-12 KJV)
God is allowing people to be healed to allow those who want to be deceived to be deceived. In Matthew 12:39-40, we read:
''But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: {40} For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Mat 12:39-40 KJV)
In Christ's 33 years, His generation sought for a sign and He called them evil. Biblical principles are constant and the same principle applies today, that when someone is looking for a sign, at the expense of salvation, such a person is evil. The Bible states we are to live by faith and not by sight....''For we walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Cor 5:7 KJV).
Our names could be written in Heaven (in the Lamb's Book of Life) even when we are amputees (or suffering any sickness/ailment). But we can never go to heaven when we're living in sin. We must repent. Salvation and obedience to Christ are more important than miracles and healing.
I would be a hypocrite if I told you I were without sin. I stumble in my walk with God. But the joy is that He picks and put me back on track. The war between the flesh and the Spirit sometimes gets high. But we trust God for His daily power. Instead of seeking miracles and healing, let's work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).
May the Lord be our help....Amen!

The Charismatic Falsehood (Message 2): TONGUES (Speaking In Tongues)
Fri/Sept5/14....Topic One: The Charismatic Falsehood
Message 2: TONGUES (Speaking In Tongues)
Message 2: TONGUES (Speaking In Tongues)
By: Brother Samuel Kwasi Forkuo
New Testament glossolalia or tongues is a supernatural
manifestation of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12). In the book of Acts, on the
day of Pentecost we read, “And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a
rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon
each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” (Acts 2:
2-4). Evidently, this panorama is wholly accredited to the mystical work
of the Holy Spirit. We cannot logically claim that these languages were
known by the speakers because it specifically states that these believers were
“filled with the Holy Ghost” and “the Spirit gave them utterance,” in which
they all spoke in “other” or diverse languages. These tongues or
languages spoken were understood by the witnesses of this event.
The tongues addressed in Paul’s epistles to the Corinthian
church differ in certain aspects from the information we have regarding the
tongues of Pentecost. On Pentecost, the glossolalia, although unknown to the
speakers, are heard and understood in the native tongues of the listeners;
whereas, the tongues in 1 Corinthians are unknown languages to both the
speakers and the hearers and must be interpreted. The former is mentioned once in the Bible,
but the latter is a continuing practice of the early church. Secondly, the tongues in Acts were a sign to
unbelieving Jews (Acts 2), but in Corinth, a sign to the unlearned believer or
potential believers entering the church (1 Cor. 14). In addition, tongues edify the church and are
of personal benefit to the individual believer.
In sum, speaking in tongues was given to all the 120
believers in Acts 2 to be a sign to unbelievers, but speaking tongues and/or its interpretation as
in 1 Corithians 14, is one of the Spiritual Gifts God gives to the Church.
Therefore, if a Christian doesn’t speak in Tongues, that does not mean he is
not a child of God. In the Church, do we all prophesy? Do we all teach? Do we
all heal? Do we all perform miracles? If
no, why should we all speak in tongues or interpret tongues? DON YOU KNOW THAT
IF GOD HAS NOT GIVEN YOU THE GIFT OF TONGUE AND U WRONGFULLY DESIRE FOR IT, THE
DEVIL CAN GIVE YOU A FAKE/COUNTERFEIT VERSION?
In Charismatic thinking the Baptism in the Holy Ghost is a
separate event which means that when a person is baptized in the Holy Spirit,
then they begin to speak in tongues giving evidence of the Holy Spirit’s
presence in their life. The whole essence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is
the washing away of our sins. Washing is the substance of the word baptism. A
person who becomes a child of God has their sins washed away at the moment of
salvation and is not a future event. The evidence that a person has the Spirit
of God in their life is their spiritual walk in the FAITH HOPE &
(especially) LOVE. ''And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be
filled with the Spirit;'' (Eph 5:18 KJV). One of the chief tenets of the
tongues movement is that you must speak in tongues because it gives evidence of
the Holy Spirit. Do you know a person can speak in tongues and still end up in
Hell? The reason is simple: Apart from the fact that the version (of tongues) a
person might be speaking could be a fake one, the tongue speaker’s failure to
remain faithful till the end can send him/her to Hell – Despite the fact that
the person spoke in tongues.
''There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are
in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. {2} For
the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of
sin and death. {3} For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through
the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for
sin, condemned sin in the flesh: {4} That the righteousness of the law might be
fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. {5} For
they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that
are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. (Rom 8:1-5 KJV).
A person is filled with the Spirit upon their day of
salvation. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who
hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in
Christ:" (Eph 1:3 KJV). As we see in this verse, we have been blessed with
ALL spiritual blessings and God has withheld no part of our spiritual
inheritance from us. We see in Eph 5:18 that we are to be filled with the
spirit which is explained in Romans 8:1-5 where we are commanded to walk in the
spirit and not in the flesh. Many charismatic movement preachers speak/minister
to the flesh and emotions and therefore fall short of walking in the spirit.
The Christian is to walk by faith and not by sight. When a person feels that
they must speak in tongues to show evidence of the Holy Spirit in their life,
then in essence they are walking by sight and flesh which is totally opposite
what the Christian walk is.
In many charismatic churches today, you can see pastors
forcing the congregants to speak in tongues – as if speaking in tongue is a ticket/visa
to Heaven. I have seen cases whereby pastors went about slapping church members
and ‘misbehaving’ during church service – all in the name of being ‘’led by the
Holy Spirit.’’ And going about, spitting, slapping people, removing shoes,
walking about anyhow, eye balls dancing? What kind of spirit are these people
led by? Definitely not the Spirit of God. A careful study of the Word of God
shows that the Holy Spirit is gentle and God will not give His children the
Holy Spirit to misbehave. ‘‘ For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power,
and of love, and of a sound mind.’’ 2 Timothy 1:7
Let’s be careful we don’t allow the enemy the chance to give
us any fake/counterfeit version of the gift of speaking in Tongues. Compare the
Tongues that you speak and the way you behave to that of the early church. If
yours is not Biblical, please be humble enough to allow God to deliver you from
that contamination.
Conclusion:
Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts that the Holy Spirit
gives to the members of His Body. If you have been blessed with that Gift, praise
God for that and use it humbly. If you are not gifted with it, please operate
in the area you have been gifted. Don’t go for a fake one. Bear in mind that,
the enemy can give you fake one. Also, know that speaking in tongues doesn’t
necessarily mean one is saved. And of course it doesn’t give a person a license
to Heaven. What is the essence of
speaking in tongues to gain men’s glory whilst living in sin?
May God grant us the Grace not to fall for the fake version of this beautiful gift (Tongues Speaking), bearing in mind that there abide three things; Faith, Hope and Love...And the GREATEST IS LOVE. Amen

The Charismatic Falsehood (Message 1): TITHE/TITHING:

Message 1: TITHING:
Message 1: TITHING:
Written

Cover Picture Designed & Emphasis Added by: Samuel Kwasi Forkuo
The first time the Bible
made mention of tithing was after four Mesopotamian kings had taken Lot
captive, Abraham attacked them & recovered all the booty. The king of Sodom
came out to meet him, and so did Melchizedek, a priest of God who had neither
beginning nor an end (typifying Christ Jesus). Melchizedek blessed Abraham, and
then Abraham “gave him a tenth of everything” (Genesis 14:20). We’re not told whether Abraham had ever tithed before, or
ever tithed afterwards – We’re only told Abraham was generous, and gave the
rest of his booty to the king of Sodom (verses 23-24). Abraham kept all of
God’s laws that were relevant in his day (Genesis 26:5). (Emphasis Added)
The next mention of
tithing is in Genesis 28:20-22. Jacob had a miraculous dream at Bethel. In the
morning, Jacob vowed to tithe if God helped him during his journey. He was
trying to make a bargain with God. He wanted special help, and in return for
that help, he was willing to worship God, and to tithe as a part of that
worship. Tithing may have been part of the common worship practices of that
time and culture, or it may have been an extra-special vow for those who desperately
desired divine help. (Emphasis Added)
Firstlings
Biblical commands about tithing are
generally about grain, wine and oil.1 A
different system of giving was required for some animals. In the last plague on
Egypt, God killed the firstborn male of every animal and human, but he spared
the Israelites and their animals. Therefore, God claimed ownership of every
Israelite firstborn and firstling male animal (Exodus 13:2; Numbers 3:13).
This applied not only to the generation
that left Egypt,2 but
every future generation as well. Firstlings of clean animals were to be given
to the priests and sacrificed (Numbers 18:15-17); priests and people ate them during the festivals (Deuteronomy 15:19-20; 12:6, 17; 14:23). Unclean animals and humans were to be redeemed (Exodus 13:12-15; 34:19-20). This continued to be the law in Nehemiah’s day (Nehemiah 10:36) and in Jesus’ day (Luke 2:23). The people also gave first
fruits of their harvest (Exodus 23:19; 34:26; Leviticus 2:14), but these first
fruits do not seem to be a fixed percentage.
Tithes
Tithing was required on flocks:
“every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod”3 (Leviticus
27:32). Was this in addition to the firstlings, or was it instead of
firstlings? We do not know exactly how these laws would be administered. It is not necessary for
us to take a position on these details.
“A tithe
of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the
trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord” (Leviticus
27:30).4 The
tithes and firstfruits belonged to God, and he assigned the Levites to receive
them on his behalf (Numbers
18:12-13, 21, 24). They
could keep 90 percent of what they were given, but had to give 10 percent as an
offering (verses 26-32). Tithing was done in the
days of Hezekiah (2 Chr. 31:5-6), Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:35-39; 12:44) and Jesus (Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42). In Malachi’s day,
tithing was required (Malachi 3:8-10), and
physical blessings were promised for obedience, just as physical blessings were
promised for obedience to the old covenant.
Additional
tithes?
God gave
the tithes to the Levites, but the people could eat their tithes during
festivals (Deuteronomy 12:5-7, 17-19; 14:23). Some
have concluded that Deuteronomy is
talking about an additional tithe, a festival tithe. It is possible to have two
tithes, but it is not possible to have two sets of firstborn animals. The
firstlings were holy to the Lord, and given to the Levites (Numbers
18:15-17), but Deuteronomy
15:19-20 says
that they were eaten by the people. Apparently the firstlings were shared
between the original owners and the Levites. It is possible that the same is
true of the tithe.5
The people needed a tithe for
the festivals, since the festivals constituted about 5 percent of the year,
plus travel time. During sabbatical years, farmers would
not have their regular income, so they may not have been able to go to every
festival in every year. Or perhaps they saved the festival tithe from year to
year.
At the
end of every three years of farming, the Israelites were to set aside a tithe
for the Levites, resident aliens, orphans and widows (Deuteronomy
14:28-29; 26:12-15). It is
not clear whether this was an alternative use of a previous tithe, or an
additional tithe.6
Tithing
in the new covenant
Now let
us consider whether tithing is required in the new covenant. Tithing is
mentioned only three or four times in the New Testament. Jesus acknowledged
that the Pharisees were very careful about tithing (Luke
18:12), and he said that they should not leave it undone (Matthew
23:23; Luke
11:42). Tithing, like other old covenant rules and rituals, was a law
at the time Jesus spoke. Jesus criticized the Pharisees not for tithing, but
for treating tithing as more important
than mercy, love, justice and faithfulness.
The only
other New Testament mention of tithing is in Hebrews. The fact that Abraham was
blessed by and gave tithes to Melchizedek illustrates the superiority of
Melchizedek and Jesus Christ over the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews
7:1-10). The passage then goes on to note that “when the priesthood is
changed, the law must be changed also” (verse 12).
There was a change of the
priesthood from the Levites to Jesus Christ, and this implies a change in the
law that assigned the Levites to be priests. How much has been changed? Hebrews
says that the old covenant is obsolete. The package of laws that commanded
tithes to be given to the Levites is obsolete.
Humans
should honor God by voluntarily returning some of the blessings he gives them —
this is still a valid principle. The only place that a percentage is required is
within the old covenant. There is good precedent for tithing before Sinai, but no proof
that it was required.
Responding
to the better covenant
Under the old covenant, tithing
was required for the support of the old covenant ministers. The Israelites were
required to give 10 percent — and their blessing was only a physical one!
Christians in the new covenant have much better blessings — spiritual ones. How
much more willingly ought we to give in thankfulness for the eternal blessings
we have in Christ Jesus?
The
Israelites were commanded to give 10 percent under a covenant that could not
make them perfect (Hebrews 7:19; 9:9). How
much more joyfully should we give to God under the new covenant? We have the
sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which does cleanse our conscience (9:14). And yet it
seems that in America today, even though we have so much more than the
Israelites did, people give on average a much smaller percentage. Many people
give less to the church than they spend on luxury items. Some people cannot
give very much, but many people could if they wanted to. God calls on us to
examine ourselves, to examine our priorities, and to be generous.
The old covenant gave us
condemnation; the new covenant gives us justification and peace with God. How
much more should we be willing to give freely and generously so God’s work can
be done in the world — to proclaim the gospel, to declare the new covenant
ministry that gives us true life, and gives that message of life to others?
People
who entrust their lives to Jesus Christ do not worry about whether tithing is
commanded in the New Testament. People who are being transformed by Christ to
be more like Christ are generous. They want to give as much as possible
to support the gospel and to support the poor. Christians should give
generously — but giving is a result of their
relationship with God, not a way to earn it. We are given grace through faith, not through tithing.
Some
people act as if Christ liberates us from the law so that we can keep more
physical blessings for ourselves. That is false — Christ liberates us so that
we can be free to serve him more, as loving children and not merely as
slaves. He frees us so we can have faith instead of selfishness.
When it
comes to money, the real question is, Is our heart in the gospel of Jesus
Christ? Are we putting our money where our heart is? We can tell where our
heart is by seeing where we are putting our money. “Where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also,” Jesus said (Matthew
6:21).
Needs
in the new covenant ministry
In the new covenant church,
there are financial needs — to support the poor, and to support the gospel by
supporting those who preach it. Christians are obligated to give financial
support for these needs. Let’s see how Paul explained this obligation in his
second letter to the Corinthians.
Paul
describes himself as a minister of the new covenant (2
Corinthians 3:6), which has much greater glory than the old (verse 8). Because of
what Christ did for him in the new covenant, Christ’s love compelled Paul to
preach the gospel, the message of reconciliation (2
Corinthians 5:11-21).
Paul exhorted the Corinthians
“not to receive God’s grace in vain” (6:1). How were they in danger of doing
this? Paul had gone out of his way to serve them, but they were withholding
their affections from him (6:3-12). He asked them for a fair exchange, for them
to open their hearts to him (6:13).
Paul told the Corinthians that
they had a duty to give something in response to what they had been given. This
response comes in terms of morality (6:14-7:1), which the Corinthians had done
(7:8-13), and in terms of affection, which the Corinthians had also done (7:2-7),
and in financial generosity, which Paul addresses in chapter 8. This is the way
in which the Corinthians had closed their hearts to Paul and withheld their
affections.
Paul cited the example of the
Macedonian churches,
who had given generously, even to the point of self-sacrifice (8:1-5). The
example is powerful; the implications are strong that the Corinthians needed to
respond to Paul’s sacrifices by making sacrifices themselves. But Paul did not
make a command (8:8). Instead, he asked first for a turning of the heart. He
wanted the Corinthians to give themselves to the Lord first, and then to
support Paul. He wanted their gift to be done in sincere love, not from
compulsion (8:5, 8). Paul reminded them that Christ had become poor for their
sakes; the implication is that the Corinthians should make financial sacrifices
in return.
But then Paul reminded the
Corinthians that they could not give more than they had (8:12). Nor did they
have to impoverish themselves to enrich others; Paul was only aiming for equity
(8:13-14). Paul again expressed confidence in their willingness to give, and
added the peer pressure of the Macedonian example and the boasting he had done
in Macedonia about the generosity of the Corinthians (8:24-9:5).
Paul again noted that the offering
must be done willingly, not from compulsion or given grudgingly (9:5, 7). He
reminded them that God rewards generosity (9:6-11) and that a good example
causes people to praise God and puts the gospel in a favorable setting
(9:12-14).
This was a collection for the
poor in Judea. But Paul said nothing about tithing. Rather, he appealed to the
new covenant environment: Christ had made many sacrifices for them, so they
ought to be willing to make a few sacrifices to help one another.
In
asking for this offering, Paul was also making a financial sacrifice. He had a
right to receive financial support himself, but instead of that, he was asking
that the offering be given to others. Paul had not asked for any financial support from Corinth
(11:7-11; 12:13-16). Instead, he had been supported by Macedonians (11:9).
Paul had
a right to be supported by the Corinthians, but he did not use it (1
Corinthians 9:3-15). This passage tells us more about our Christian duty to give
financial support to the gospel. Workers should be able to receive benefits of
their work (9:7). The old covenant even made provision for oxen to be given
benefits of their work (9:9).
Throughout
his appeal, Paul does not cite any laws of tithing. He says that priests
received benefits from their work in the temple (9:13), but he does not cite
any percentage. Their example is cited in the same way as the example of
soldiers, vineyard workers, herdsmen, oxen, plowers and threshers. It is simply
a general principle. As Jesus said, “The worker deserves his wages” (Luke
10:7). Paul cited the oxen and wages scriptures again in 1
Timothy 5:17-18. Elders, especially those who preach and teach, should be honored
financially as well as with respect.
Jesus
also commanded, “those who preach the gospel should receive their living from
the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). This implies that those who believe should provide a living for some who
preach. There is a financial duty, and there is a promised reward for
generosity (though that reward may not necessarily be physical or financial).
A
need to be generous
Christians have received riches
of God’s grace, and are to respond with generosity and giving. Christians are
called to a life of service, sharing and stewardship. We have an obligation to
do good. When we give ourselves to the Lord, we will give generously.
Jesus
often taught about money. “Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me,” said Jesus to a rich
man (Luke
18:22). He said the same thing to his disciples (12:33). The new
covenant demands all that we have, and that is fair, since Jesus gave all he
had for us. He praised a widow who put two coins into the temple treasury,
because she gave “all she had” (21:4).
Wealth is often an enemy of
faith. It can “choke” people and cause them to be spiritually unfruitful
(8:14). “Woe to you who are rich,” Jesus warned (6:24). He warned us about the
dangers of greed (12:15) and warned about the danger of storing up wealth for
self without being “rich toward God” (12:16-21). When we use wealth to help
others, we gain “treasure in heaven” (12:33). This helps us have our heart in
heavenly things instead of earthly, temporary things (12:34).
“No servant can serve two
masters…. You cannot serve both God and money” (16:13). But money competes for
our allegiance; it tempts us to seek our own desires rather than the needs of
the kingdom. After the rich man went away sad, Jesus exclaimed: “How hard it is
for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to
go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the
kingdom of God” (18:24-25).
Conclusion
Christians need to give, to
share their resources and blessings with others. They have a duty to support
the preaching of the gospel, to give financial support to their spiritual
leaders, and the church needs this support. If disciples of Jesus Christ can
give, but do not, they are falling short.
The old covenant required 10
percent. The new covenant does not specify a percentage, nor do we. However,
the new covenant admonishes people to give what they can, and tithing still
provides an instructive point of comparison. For some people, 10 percent may be
too much. But some will be able to give more, and some are doing so. Christians
should examine their own circumstances and the better blessings they have been
given in the new covenant through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us
and the gift of the Holy Spirit to us. Contributions should be given to the
church for its collective work of preaching the gospel and the expenses
involved in the local ministry and congregational needs.
Likewise, the new covenant does
not specify any particular percentage for assisting the poor. Instead, it asks
for equity — and we certainly have room for improvement in this.
The old covenant required
simple percentages. Everyone knew how much was required. The new covenant has
no set percentages. Instead, it requires more soul-searching, more training for
the conscience, more selfless love for others, more faith, more voluntary
sacrifice and less compulsion. It tests our values, what we treasure most, and
where our hearts are.

Endnotes
1 The Bible describes tithing
in an agricultural economy. It does not tell us whether, or how, potters,
carpenters, merchants, etc. calculated tithes.
2 For
the generation that left Egypt, God made a grand substitution: Instead of the
firstborn male of each family and flock, God accepted the tribe of Levi and all
its animals (Numbers 3:40-50; 8:16-18).
3 It is not clear how this
worked. Was the entire flock counted, or only the lambs? In bad years, the
flock would come back no larger than it had been the previous year, so it
wouldn’t make sense to tithe on all the adults again, since there would have
been no increase. Perhaps the “rod” served in some way to separate lambs from
adults.
4 It might be argued that the
tithes were holy and therefore had always been holy, even before the old
covenant was made. That is possible, but it cannot be proven. The firstlings
were also holy to the Lord, but this was based on events of the Exodus,
not on creation. “Once holy, always holy” is not a valid principle.
5 A
separate tithe for festival use is described in the apocryphal book of Tobit
1:6-8, Josephus’ Antiquities 4.4.3; 4.8.8; 4.8.22, and the
second-century B.C. book Jubilees32:10-14. Some
sources suggest that this second tithe was calculated on the basis of the 90
percent left after the first tithe, not the original 100 percent (Sanders, Judaism:
Practice and Belief 63 BCE–66 CE, p.
167; International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, “Tithe,” vol. 4, p. 863, citing the
Mishna Maaser sheni 2.1.)
6 As noted above, Tobit,
Josephus and Jubilees give evidence for three tithes. The Mishnah, however,
combines the festival tithe and the poor tithe: the second tithe being used for
the festival in years 1, 2, 4 and 5, and being used for the poor in years 3 and
6 out of the seven-year farming cycle (Sanders, p. 149). Since farmers had an
increase in only six out of every seven years, they gave on average 3.3 percent
of their increase to the poor. If tradesmen tithed (and no biblical law
required them to) they would give about 2.8 percent on average, since they had
income even during sabbatical and jubilee years.

Christian Unity vs The False Ecumenical Unity
Christian Unity vs The False Ecumenical Unity
In our day, we hear much about Christian unity. Some of this is good, but most of it is bad. True Christian unity is something Christians need to strive for, since Christians are in one body, with Christ Jesus as the Head (1 Cor. 12:12; Eph. 5:23). God wants no division in the body (1 Cor. 12:25). Real Christians are all on the same team with a common goal. The true, Biblical unity is also referred to in Eph. 4:3,13.
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (Eph 4:3)
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Eph 4:11-13)
Moreover, the Lord prayed for unity among those who are true followers:
My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me (Jn. 17:20-23).
Without a doubt, Christian unity is important to God, but such Christian unity is only among Christians! To unify Christians with religious people who are not Christians will result in confusion, spiritual harm and apostasy. So a major issue here is who is a Christian so we can unify with him? To answer that, both one’s life and doctrine must be considered. Real Christians have experienced the new creation and are living holy now as they follow Jesus:
Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil.... (1 John 3:7,8)
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:10)
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27)
False Unity - Ecumenical Unity
In contrast to all of this, there is also a false unity offered and promoted by the devil! The counterfeit would like to combine all who merely profess a belief in Jesus Christ under one religious banner of tolerance. They seem to think we should unite on things like the Lord’s prayer. They also believe doctrine is not important. Unwittingly they must not realize that very statement, doctrine is not important, is in itself a doctrine! Therefore, such false unity seekers really do believe doctrine is important! In fact, that very unscriptural doctrine seems to be their standard to judge and condemn all, who believe otherwise, as unloving anddivisive! The real truth is: doctrine is important. The Apostle Paul, who stressed unity also commanded Titus:
You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine (Titus 2:1).
In fact, to qualify as an elder one must not only hold to sound doctrine, but also must be able to refute those who oppose it:
He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. (Titus 1:9).
Christian Separation
Paul also taught a separation and division that few in our day seem to know of, especially those pushing an ecumenical unity! He taught we shouldkeep away from people who cause division and put spiritual obstacles in our way that are contrary to the apostle’s doctrines:
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people (Rom. 16:17,18).
Notice what else he taught about separation:
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty” (2 Cor. 6:14-18).
The Apostle John, who exalted Christian love, magnified true doctrine (or teaching). Please note the spiritual harm that can be done:
If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work (2 Jn. 10,11).
Doctrine is one of the reasons why the Bible was given (2 Tim. 3:16). Moreover, the loving Lord Jesus Himself exalted true doctrine and warned against false doctrine:
“Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees .... How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matt. 16:6,11,12).
While it is true that Jesus ate and drank with sinners in an effort to evangelize them, he never shared the teaching platform with false teachers or joined an organization consisting of such! Neither did any of the Apostles. If the Lord Jesus or his apostles would have done so, Christians would have misunderstood such acceptance as being an endorsement of the wrong. He then would have been lending to their credibility by not denouncing them. Christ was and is love incarnate, yet he is also the supreme example of uncompromising fidelity to the truth! No one publicly denounced the Pharisees like the loving Lord Jesus (Matt. 23:1-33), who wanted unity among his true followers and prayed for such.
Similarly, Paul and Barnabas had a sharp dispute and debate with people teaching false doctrine regarding salvation (Acts 15:1,2). This conflict led to the Council at Jerusalem, which resulted in good. An inside look at Paul’s conflict with them is cited in Gal. 2:5:
We did not give in to them [false brothers] for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.
Their example shows that truth regarding the plan of salvation is pre-eminent over unity with other religious people! Therefore, to unify at the expense of truth is NOT from God. That is not Christian unity, but the devil’s false unity. Furthermore, Paul risked Christian unity with Peter to maintain truth, when Peter was in error! See Gal. 2:11-21.
There is also another obvious problem with today’s false unity. Why is the doctrine of the Trinity exalted over the plan of salvation? In 2 Cor. 11:4, we see that it is just as bad to preach a different gospel as it is to preach a different Jesus! (The gospel is the plan of salvation, 1 Cor. 4:15; 15:1,2; Rom. 1:16,17.) How, then, can well-known speakers share a teaching platform with a Catholic priest, Mormon or someone else, who represents a religious system which represents a dangerously false plan of salvation responsible for leading multitudes to hell?
Why aren’t present-day Christian leaders following Jesus’ example? Can’t they see the spiritual harm that is being done? Such false unitycoming forth from the Ecumenical Movement, Charismatic Conference, Promise Keepers and other similar meetings is certainly not the kind that proceeds from the Spirit of Truth, also known as the Holy Spirit (Jn. 14:17; 15:26), who inspired the writings of the Scriptures! A false unity leads to an amalgamation with the unholy and untrue and must, therefore, be avoided! If not, spiritual harm will certainly occur. That is why many have been duped to return to Catholicism and thereby to infant baptism, the papal Mary needed for salvation, etc.
The Holy Spirit had Paul exalt the true plan of salvation with an anathema warning for all who preached a false gospel. Why exalt the true gospel to that degree? Because it is the ONLY message that can bring forth true salvation:
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ (Gal. 1:8-10).
According to the aforementioned Scripture, Paul took such an uncompromised dogmatic stand because he was trying to please God!Present-day servant of God, if you take such a Scriptural stand as Paul did, misinformed people will probably wrongly judge you as unloving anddivisive. Remember, Paul was godly and spoke as a man approved by God and entrusted with the gospel. He wasn’t trying to please men, but God:
On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts (1 Thess. 2:4).
May the true saints of God strive for Christian unity and avoid the false unity like the proverbial plague!
